The Netherlands Visa and Work Permit Requirements

Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond the end of your stay. U.S. citizens do not need visas to enter the Netherlands. However, within 3 working days after your arrival, you will need to apply for a temporary residence permit that allows you to live and work in Holland as an au pair for a maximum of 12 months. You must bring your passport and an original, certified copy of your birth certificate with you. You will also be asked to show proof of being unmarried. Your host family will assist you with this procedure and pay for the cost of the permit.

 

Citizens of full European (EFTA, EEA) Member Countries are able to live and work in The Netherlands without a visa or work permit.

Citizens of new EU member countries (Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Slovakia and Slovenia ) will need to apply for a work permit to work in the Netherlands. Employers need to apply for the Work Permit. For more information see www.ind.nl

The Netherlands are a member of the Schengen countries. The 15 Schengen countries are: Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Iceland, Italy, Greece, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain and Sweden. With a Schengen visa, you may enter one country and travel freely throughout the Schengen zone.

Passport holders from the following countries do not need a visa to visit The Netherlands or other Schengen countries: Andorra, Argentina, Australia, Bolivia, Brunei, Bulgaria, Canada, Chile, Costa Rica, Croatia, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras. Israel, Japan, Republic Of Korea, Liechtenstein, Malaysia, Mexico, Monaco, New Zealand, Nicaraqua, Panama, Paraguay, Romania, San Marino, Singapore, Switzerland, United States, Uruguay, Vatican and Venezuella.

Nationals of countries not mentioned above will need a visa to visit The Netherlands

Working Holiday Visas: The Netherlands has a working Holiday Scheme available to young people from Australia, New Zealand, and Canada, it allows them to visit the Netherlands for a maximum of one year, they may do temporary work to finance their holiday in the Netherlands.

To be eligible for this permit, you have to meet a number of requirements. You must

* Be aged between 18 and 30

* Satisfy the visa officer that the primary intention is to holiday in the Netherlands, with employment being an incidental rather than a primary reason for the visit

* Confirm intended place of stay

* Be aged between 18 and 30 years, both inclusive, at the time of application

* Possess a national passport valid for at least fifteen months

* Possess a return ticket or sufficient funds to purchase such a ticket

*Possess sufficient funds to cover your stay in the Netherlands, at the discretion of the relevant authorities

* Have full medical insurance cover for the Netherlands valid for a minimum of twelve months from date of entry into the Netherlands

*Not be accompanied by children.
